Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival began centuries ago in China as a way to give thanks for a good harvest. Its traditions and myths center around the Moon, which we will celebrate in crafts, food and entertainment. Chinese Theater Works, a non-profit theatre company located in Long Island City, N.Y. will kick off the afternoon with a shadow puppet performance of “Tiger Tales”. This wry fable is appropriate for children ages 5+. Following their performance, a variety of crafts, tours and games are offered along with the opportunity to sample a number of traditional Chinese holiday refreshments. Solomon’s Garden: Exploring the Biblical Roots of Holy Land Flora

Ikenobo Ikebana Workshop

Professor Toshio Okimatsu teaches a hands-on workshop of Ikenobo Ikebana. Ikenobo is the oldest and largest school of Ikebana, or Japanese floral art in Japan, founded in the 15th century by the Buddhist monk Ikenobo Senno. Ikebana is much more than simply putting flowers in a container. It is a highly disciplined art form where nature and humanity are brought together. Professor Okimatsu is the Vice President of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of New Jersey. Students will learn about the history of Ikenobo Ikebana and will make their own arrangement under Professor Okimatsu’s expert guidance. All materials are provided but students must bring scissors.
