Bookbinding: A Historical Perspective
MORRISTOWN, NJ – Bookbinding has a long historical tradition. The paper we use today is much like the rag paper that originated in China in the first century A.D. Unlike the works from Ancient Greece and Rome, which were documented on scrolls in Ancient India and China, information was written down on leaves, folded, and sewn together by hand. While there is no way to pinpoint exactly when and where bookbinding originated, some of the earliest examples of books as we know them today, existed in the Far East by the first century B.C. In many cases, books were used for religious purposes, and created by monks of many different faiths.
