Thanksgiving Harvest Home & Armistice Observance

MORRISTOWN, NJ - Step back in time and celebrate Thanksgiving and Armistice Day in 1918 at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in Morris Township on Sunday, November 16, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Experience first-hand the lifestyle of Charles Foster and his daughter Caroline, former residents of Fosterfields, as well as their employees, the Woods family, and see how they would have celebrated the holiday.

At the Foster’s home, follow the enticing aromas to The Willows kitchen where the cook is preparing Thanksgiving fare on a wood-burning stove. Also, you will see that the servants have been cleaning the house in preparation for the holiday. At the Farmhouse, watch as holiday dinner preparations are also underway.

While the harvest has been gathered, there is still much to do on the farm. Help husk corn that is food for the animals, and saw the wood that is needed for winter heating and cooking. Be sure to visit the farm animals, and watch a cow milking demonstration.

In recognition of local clubs that held annual Thanksgiving hunts during the time period, enjoy seeing a unique sidesaddle riding demonstration. Take a fun and picturesque horse-drawn wagon ride around the farm.

The Armistice, or cease fire that officially stopped the carnage of WWI, went into effect in Europe on November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m. Over the years, Armistice Day, later named Veterans Day, has honored the men and women who served in the U.S. armed forces. On this day, gather at 2 pm for a special choral tribute to the veterans performed by the Picatinny Chorus.

The special activities continue at the Visitors Center. View an exhibit that highlights the 350th birthday of New Jersey, and make a family-friendly craft to take home. A ‘must-see’ is the interactive Transportation Exhibit where Miss Foster’s 1922 Model T Ford and 1929 Hupmobile are on display, along with a carriage and truck you can ‘ride.’

Admission for Thanksgiving-Harvest Home is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors (65+), $4 for children ages 4 to 16, and $2 for children ages 2 and 3. FREE for children under age 2 and Friends members with a valid membership card. Current military personnel and veterans are admitted FREE for this event. For more information, please call 973.326.7645.

Founding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation, Nature, and the Shaping of the American Nation
This beautifully illustrated talk looks at the lives of the founding fathers and how their attitude to plants, gardens, nature and agriculture shaped our nation. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison regarded themselves foremost as farmers and plantsmen. For them, gardening, agriculture, and botany were elemental passions, as deeply ingrained in their characters as their belief in liberty for the nation they were creating. In a unique retelling of the creation of America, award-winning historian Andrea Wulf discusses how plants, politics, and personalities intertwined as never before. This program is eligible for 2.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEU’s.
