Left To Right: Betty Cass-Schmidt, President of the Morris County Park Commission, and Marketing Team Leaders Kevin Gick, Milburn-Union store, and Margie West, West Orange store.

MORRISTOWN, NJ – Whole Foods Market, as part of their 5% day, contributed over $14,000 to the Morris County Park Commission. Three participating stores in New Jersey that held the 5% Day in April included, Madison, West Orange, and Milburn-Union,.

Accepting the check, President of the Morris County Park Commission Betty Cass-Schmidt stated, “We are most grateful for the generosity of Whole Foods Market and to be the recipient of their 5% day. The proceeds will positively impact the Park Commission in a myriad of ways including environmental education and conservation initiatives.”

Several times a year, Whole Food Market stores hold community giving days, or 5% Days. On these giving days, five percent of that day’s net sales are donated to a local nonprofit or educational organization. The groups that benefit from these 5% Days are as varied as the communities themselves. According to Leigh Siegel, Store Team Leader, Madison location, “Whole Foods Market has a strong relationship with the Morris County Park Commission and supports their valued mission. With a focus on environmental conservation and education, supporting this partnership is a perfect endeavor.” Whole Foods Market 5% Day focuses on Hunger Relief, Environment, Agriculture and Education.

Civil War Invades Morristown
Civil War Invades Morristown - a young boy helps a reenactor load a cannon

MORRISTOWN, NJ – Step onto the battlefields of the American Civil War, the struggle that altered the political, social, and economic landscape of the nation, and into the lives of those involved at the Civil War Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and June 22. The Second New Jersey Brigade is stationed at Historic Speedwell in Morristown and is the sponsor of this unique two-day event that presents the lives of Civil War soldiers more vividly than textbooks.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the re-enactors lead activities throughout the eight-acre site, presenting the daily lives of soldiers with authentic cooking, dress, and general setup. Enjoy the musket drills, artillery drills, daily mail call, bayonet drills, and a staged skirmish. Marching drills include period instruments as soldiers proudly go into battle. Cover your ears as the massive period cannon takes aim and fires! A Civil War-era Signal Corps demonstrates how important messages were sent between units using colorful flags. Don’t miss the demonstration of a recreated Civil War telegraph station.

Enjoy learning about the basics of battlefield medicine for soldiers who suffered injuries or disease. Visit the medical area where re-enactors care for the ‘wounded’ and demonstrate how these emergency units ran during battles. Around every corner there is something to experience.

While enjoying your visit to the past, tour the National Historic Landmark Factory Building with an interactive, hands-on telegraph exhibit, and the Vail Home, built more than 200 years ago. Explore the exhibits on the Speedwell Ironworks, a granary full of early farm implements, and watch the enormous 24-foot overshot waterwheel turn in the Wheelhouse. The fee for the Civil War Weekend is $7 for adults; $6 for seniors (65 +); $5 for ages 4 - 16; $4 for ages 2 - 3; and under 2 are FREE. Sheep Dog Trails Return to Fosterfields
border collie herding sheep

MORRISTOWN, NJ – Fosterfields isn’t actually going to the dogs, but sheep herding dogs and their handlers are coming to the Morris Township estate farm on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. At the Sheep Dog Trials, which are back by popular demand, watch the amazing teamwork between dog and handler in this two-day competition. Responding to the handler’s voice and whistle commands, the Border Collie directs sheep through a specified obstacle course in less than ten minutes. Sheep are not always the most cooperative or responsive, so failure to complete the course properly results in a deduction of points.

Unlike most dogs, Border Collies love to work! Their history dates back several centuries to England and Scotland where herding sheep was the dog’s main occupation. Not for treats or other rewards, the Border Collie responds because it simply wants to please its owner by working.

The Sheep Dog Trials are sponsored by the United State Border Collie Handlers Association (USBCHA) and North East Border Collie Association (NEBCA). Mark Sutherland, Manger of Historic Sites at the Morris County Park Commission, stated, “The event expects approximately 40 handlers and 80 dogs. Participants hail from Ontario, Canada, New England, and the Middle Atlantic States, as well as Virginia and Maryland. Spectators will be in awe of the unique relationship between Border Collie and handler as well as the intelligence, skill, and patience of these trained dogs. The event provides fun and excitement for the entire family!”

Since this is a competition, the top ten dogs each day receive a ribbon and a cash prize. The overall winner for both days merits a special award. In addition, rewards are given for the most promising young dog, and for the handler receiving a placement at the Open Trial for the first time.

The fee to attend Sheep Dog Trials is $8 for adults; $7 for seniors (65 +); $6 for ages 4 - 16; $4 for ages 2 - 3; and under 2 are FREE. Please do NOT bring your own dogs to the sheep dog trials. For more information, please call 973.326.7645, or visit morrisparks.net.

Let Nature “Take You by the Hand” with a Cell Phone Tour at Willowwood Arboretum
Willowwood Arboretum photo
MORRISTOWN, NJ. – Tour Willowwood Arboretum with a guide, anytime you like! Just bring your cell phone to Willowwood Arboretum and enjoy a free 1-hour long tour of the grounds by simply dialing a number and listening. “Willowwood’s beauty is clearly evident, but it’s fascinating history is not. Using cell phone technology helps us to share the story of Willowwood Arboretum with visitors and provide in depth plant information,” says Lesley Parness, Superintendent of Horticultural Education for the Morris County Park Commission.

Guests can tour Willowwood’s grounds daily from 8 a.m. until dusk year-round. There are plans to annually update the “Where Nature Takes You by the Hand” the cell phone tour and add a Smart Phone component allowing uploads of archival photographs and links to botanic-based websites. This cell phone tour is offered through October and with the generous support of the Willowwood Foundation. Rob Diemar, President of the Willowwood Foundation adds, “The Willowwood Foundation is excited to have been able to work with the Morris County Park Commission that introduces the first cell phone tour to Willowwood Arboretum. This project brings Willowwood into the 21st century and provides guests visiting the Arboretum an opportunity to learn so much more about its rich history. This will truly enhance the visitors experience at Willowwood."

Willowwood Arboretum, located at 300 Longview Road in Chester Township, is comprised of approximately 130 acres of themed gardens, plant collections, meadows, and native woodland in the Hacklebarney Hills on the southwestern border of Morris County, New Jersey. The Arboretum is located on a former farm dating to the 1700s.

In addition to the striking scenic landscape and collection of plants and historic structures, the Arboretum is historically important as a garden and plant collection that was created by brothers Henry and Robert Tubbs, who bought the property in 1908, and Dr. Benjamin Blackburn, a professor of horticulture at Rutgers University and Drew University who helped to establish the site as a public arboretum in 1950. Today, Willowwood Arboretum offers numerous horticultural displays and native and exotic plant collections primarily for self-guided walks. Approximately 2,500 plant species are present on the property. Recreational opportunities are enriched at Willowwood Arboretum by trails linking the site to the Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center, the Black River Trails, and Patriots’ Path Trail systems.
